Buying a kiln is a major decision for clay people. As the kiln is probably one of the most important and most expensive piece of equipment you will buy, it is important to choose the right model that suits your needs.

Before choosing your kiln, we would like you to answer the below questions. When you answered these questions, let’s choose together the right MARS kiln for you

1-WHAT SIZE OF THE KILN DO I NEED?

The size and capacity of the kiln is determined by the size and amount of the ceramic items to be fired. However, in the future, if it is decided to produce more pieces in size and in quantity, kiln may not be sufficient. Therefore, purchasing one size larger kiln is recommended.

2-WHAT SHOULD BE THE MAX. TEMPERATURE OF THE KILN?

What type of ware to be produced (porcelain, stoneware, earthenware...) should be considered in order to determine the temperature at which the kiln to be operated. This will also determines your electrical or gas fired kiln choice.
Additionally, electrical kilns are designed to operate in certain voltage and they are affected by the voltage changes and it certainly will affect the designed performance of the kiln. Therefore max. temperature is recommended to be chosen higher than needed.

3-WHAT ARE THE ELECTRICAL OR GAS SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS?

The electrical system in regards to voltage, phase, and amperage or gas supply of the place where your kiln to be located should be appropriate with the kiln you plan to buy.

4-SHOULD I BUY TOP LOADING OR FRONT LOADING KILN?

Top loading kilns can be placed in smaller spaces and therefore it is widely chosen by the ones who has limited space. However, in these kilns, loading and unloading are not convenient when you compare with front loading kilns. Besides, hot air raising when you opened the door could be bothersome. If you want a test kiln or are a hobby ceramicist they may prove suitable, but front loading kilns are mostly prefered and in the long run they are better investment.

5-WHERE SHOULD I LOCATE MY KILN?

When planning the place that kiln will be located, you should take into account the kiln's exterior dimensions and the clearance space. In order to ventilate the kiln properly, it needs a minimum of 45 cm air space around its sides. More clearance is needed between the ceiling and the top of the kiln, 120 cm or more space is recommended. Moreover, there should be enough space free of objects in front of its door.

6-HOW WILL I CONTROL THE KILN TEMPERATURE?

Nowadays, manually operated kilns are being replaced by the kilns automatically operated. Except specific cases, not the existency but the quality of the automation is being discussed. While deciding on, you should comprehend how the controller works and how the kiln temperature can be controlled.
